Abstract
The article examines socio-psychological factors in forming a locus of control that supports effective Internet use among young people. Drawing on Rotter’s social learning theory and the work of Uzbek psychologists, it analyses the roles of family, educational environment, peer group, and social-media environment. In the context of a digital society, considering these factors, preventive and developmental recommendations are offered. The digitalization process has become a priority direction of state policy in Uzbekistan, with the "Digital Uzbekistan – 2030" strategy aiming to develop digital skills among the population. Effective and safe Internet use by young people is crucial, as the Internet environment has became the primary arena for the socialization of the younger generation. It is precisely here that the locus of control, meaning where an individual places responsibility for the outcomes of their actions, becomes a decisive psychological factor. Effective Internet use depends not only on technical skills but also on an individual's readiness to take responsibility for their actions, i.e., an internal locus of control. Since the locus of control is shaped by the social environment, its targeted development is possible through the cooperation of family, school, higher education, and social institutions. Practical recommendations include psychological and pedagogical training for parents on digital upbringing, strengthening critical thinking and media literacy in educational programs, and implementing methods for diagnosing and developing locus of control for psychologists working with youth.References
